  • Telework - or telecommuting, is an alternative work arrangement where paid employees work for all or a specific amount of time away from their traditional place of business, usually at home.  Over 21 million Americans telework at least part of the week and this number is growing (Source: United States Bureau of Labor Statistics).   Spurred on by the rising costs of maintaining a physical office, the negative environmental impact of commuting, and improvements in internet communication, organizations are increasingly turning to telework as a viable work arrangement. We are conducting a longitudinal case study of a division of a market research organization which has recently made the transition to full-time telework.   We are investigating changes in employee anxiety, distraction, communication, cohesion, and performance.
  • Tragedy of the Commons - is a phrase that refers to poor outcomes in public resource economics and psychology. The quitessential example of the Tragedy of the Commons is the case of a group of herders. The cost of adding animals to a common pasture is shared by the entire group; however, all the profits gained from that animal are kept by the individual herder. Therefore, it is in everyone's interests to place as many animals as possible on the grazing land. However, this behavior causes a rapid depletion of the pastures. We are conducting a study to discover the role that individual personality differences have on consumption patterns in laboratory simulations of such a situation. The long-term goal of this project is to provide clues on how to best delegate a message of long-term sustainability to the general population.
  • Social Facilitation - Social Facilitation, one of the oldest phenomena in social psychology, is caused by social presence. Traditionally, social presence has been viewed as a dichotomous variable (an observer is either present or not present). However, we are testing the idea that social presence be viewed as a continuous variable differing on the salience of presence. We are also testing the effect of two other often overlooked types of presence: anticipatory and residual social presence. Anticipatory social presence relates to anticipating the arrival of an observer and residual social presence relates to the feeling of "presence" which lingers after observers have left.
  • Social Networking - The object of the study is to investigate the role of Facebook applications in communication. An exploratory study consists of a survey which aims to uncover how applications have redefined communication between existing friends and strangers. Participants are asked to describe what motivates application use, as well as how often and for long Facebook applications are utilized on a day-to-day basis.
